从传说的猫妖，到身负重任的“驱鼠大将”，再到家庭中的“喵星人”，猫在人类社会中地位的变化，是近现代史的一面镜子。
猫的近现代，是猫终于成为猫的时代。人们不再心怀畏惧，将猫视为妖怪或神明，也不再用忠义等道德准则去评判它们。然而近代化又让人们以“是否有用”去衡量它们，大肆饲养与大肆捕杀反复上演。直到20世纪中后期，猫终于开始以自身的形象成为人们刻画、消费的对象，“猫热潮”到来。现代社会生活和家庭的空洞化，凸显了猫在陪伴方面的无可取代，猫成为家庭一员。
猫的近现代，是近现代社会的延伸。猫不会说话，我们必须意识到人类本质上无法理解猫的幸福，要经常以批判的眼光审视自己的行为，否则就变成一种自我满足。猫的幸福只有推动人类社会不断前行才能实现，人类的幸福也同样如此。
