Venerati nell’antico Egitto dei faraoni, celebrati in alcune delle più suggestive poesie di Charles Baudelaire, amati perfino da un autore altrimenti refrattario ai contatti affettivi come H.P. Lovecraft, i gatti sono oggi gli animali domestici più diffusi nel mondo. E senz’altro i più fotografati, i più ripresi, i più condivisi sui social network, protagonisti inarrestabili di meme e video amatoriali che scalano le classifiche di YouTube e affollano le bacheche di Facebook. Ai gatti ha dedicato un libro piccolo e prezioso Giorgio Celli, etologo fra i più prestigiosi del nostro paese e «gattofilo impenitente». Fu proprio una gatta, Giuditta, ad accendere in lui, ancora bambino, l’amore per l’etologia. In queste pagine Celli descrive atteggiamenti e abitudini, movenze, sguardi, attento a registrare quell’inafferrabile, imprevedibile misteriosità che da sempre è sinonimo di gatti. Che fissino intenti angoli vuoti ai nostri occhi, o che spariscano per ore chissà dove, i segreti dei gatti rappresentano un magnete irresistibile per la curiosità umana. I gatti raccontati da Celli – burloni o permalosi, gelosi o riconoscenti, grassi o acrobatici, reazionari o proletari – sono al centro di storie a volte spassose, a volte commoventi, e offrono l’occasione al grande scienziato per riflettere e farci riflettere sul rapporto tanto speciale che ci lega a questi animali. La conclusione, sorprendente, è che – per riprendere un detto di Marcel Mauss – forse il gatto non è un animale domestico, ma il solo animale ad aver addomesticato l’uomo. Read more
