Questo libro, in una nuova edizione raddoppiata rispetto alla precedente, riunisce tutto quanto H.P. Lovecraft ha scritto sui felini: saggistica, narrativa, poesia, lettere. Nell’eterna diatriba tra gatti e cani, il Sognatore di Providence si schiera con tutta la sua cultura a difesa dei “signori dei tetti”, della stirpe “che si strofina alle caviglie”, del “destriero di Freya”, del “cugino della Sfinge”, dello “ierofante dei misteri”, e ci spiega perché esso è superiore al cane per innumerevoli motivi: fisici e psichici, morali e ideali, estetici e metafisici, filosofici e pratici. Il dato fondamentale è che il gatto è parte del mito, il cane più prosaicamente fa parte della realtà. Nel suo elogio del gatto Lovecraft trasfonde la sua filosofia di vita, la sua “visione del mondo”, la sua utopia artistica, la sua mentalità da “rivoluzione conservatrice”, il suo amore per la classicità greco-romana, il suo senso estetizzante, il suo concetto di aristocrazia della cultura e dei costumi. Il piccolo felino, che era capace di tenersi in grembo per l’intera notte senza alzarsi per andare a letto, diventa il concentrato delle sue idee sull’uomo e il mondo, il simbolo del suo concetto di vita, un microcosmo in cui si può osservare la bellezza del macrocosmo e la perfezione della Natura. Nessuno ha scritto in così poche pagine una apologia dei felini culturalmente, filosoficamente e metafisicamente più profonda. In fondo, dice Lovecraft, «il cane dà, ma il gatto è». Read more
