Molto spesso gli animali si ammalano proprio attraverso i trattamenti che subiscono durante le loro visite dal veterinario, ossia a causa di vaccini, medicine e un’alimentazione sbagliata. L’autrice divide i veterinari in tre categorie: • i veterinari “cinici”, cioè coloro che sono consapevoli dei danni che arrecano agli animali, ma che nonostante questo continuano a lavorare come hanno sempre fatto; • un secondo gruppo di veterinari “inconsapevoli” che non riflette particolarmente su ciò che fa, ma opera come ha imparato durante i suoi studi e come apprende nei vari corsi di aggiornamento; • un terzo gruppo di veterinari “consapevoli”, che hanno capito la portata delle loro azioni e hanno preso altre strade. Il libro vuole aiutare i veterinari “inconsapevoli” a diventare “consapevoli”. L’autrice mette in evidenza come i dati dimostrino che negli ultimi decenni siano in aumento, fra cani e gatti, malattie come il diabete, l’epilessia, le malattie del fegato e dei reni, le allergie, ecc … Gli animali domestici diventano sempre più spesso dei malati cronici e per loro, come per gli uomini, invecchiare rimanendo sani è sempre più difficile e raro.
