Dieci milioni di gatti abitano nelle case giapponesi, a testimonianza di una relazione che si è evoluta nei secoli. I primi arrivarono via nave dalla Cina insieme ai testi dei sutra buddhisti e vennero amati dagli aristocratici della corte di Kyōtō, prima di divenire gli attuali gatti domestici presenti un po’ ovunque, dalle stazioni ai templi, agli anime.
Neko jita (lingua di gatto), Neko no hitai (la fronte del gatto per riferirsi a spazi piccoli), Nekonadegoe (la voce suadente e calma dei gatti e degli umani che con loro interagiscono) sono alcuni modi di dire che la lingua giapponese utilizza.
Esiste una vasta letteratura a tema neko che risale indietro nel tempo. Quella contemporanea è detta nekobungaku ed è costituita da racconti e romanzi in cui compaiono come personaggi di particolare rilievo gatti e gatte.
