How to Raise Poultry in Your BackyardHave you ever wondered if keeping a flock of farm birds would be a good idea? Are you looking for a possible side income with little initial investment? Maybe raising poultry is for you!I’m a farmer by necessity, a homesteader by passion.I’ve been raising animals for a long time. My husband and I moved to a 5-acre plot of land nearly 20 years ago now with the intention of growing food, spreading out, and, yes, getting birds. I had always wanted fresh eggs every morning, and the idea seemed so romantic. A little homestead to call our own. It’s not romantic, in case anyone is wondering. It’s a lot of hard work and long hours and grumpy birds. But here we are, nearly 20 years later. I’ve raised thousands of birds from all different species and breeds. I’ve used fertilized eggs and bought babies from other breeders. I’ve nursed sick birds over long nights without sleep to keep them in my flock. I’ve spent countless hours researching, reading books and magazines, talking to other bird enthusiasts, and cultivating knowledge.Avoid my mistakes!I’ve made many mistakes along the way, too, don’t get me wrong! I’m here today writing this outside, watching my birds play with a frozen ice treat on an unusually warm spring day, to try and help you avoid some of the mistakes that I myself have made.Owning birds has been very enjoyable for my family, and I hope you get the same experience as we have. While the act of owning and caring for another life is serious, and you should treat it as such, it’s also a really great time. Don’t let yourself get worked up or stressed too often, and relax a little. Make sure you stop to smell the roses or, you know, hug the chickens!I attempted to impart all of my wisdom about raising fowl in my book. My hope is that you will learn so much! Read more
