Solo una buona dose di follia può aver spinto Bernd Heinrich a intraprendere la ricerca da cui è nato questo libro sulla mente di una delle creature più straordinarie del pianeta, il corvo imperiale (Corvus corax), l’«uccello-lupo» dei popoli nordici. Per verificare la diffusa credenza, comune a tutte le culture, che i corvi abbiano una intelligenza prodigiosa (per Tucidide erano abbastanza scaltri da non cibarsi di animali morti di peste, e Plinio descrisse il modo ingegnoso in cui riuscivano a bere da un recipiente col collo troppo stretto gettandovi dentro pietruzze per innalzare il livello dell’acqua), Heinrich, poco incline a rimanere nel chiuso di un laboratorio, ha infatti condotto una avventurosa serie di esperimenti e di osservazioni sul campo, vivendo in solitudine nei boschi, arrampicandosi sugli alberi ad altezze vertiginose, e spingendosi a fare da padre adottivo a giovani corvi prelevati dal nido ancora implumi. L’esito è un’indagine che del corvo ci svela tutto: dal comportamento sociale alla sfera affettiva, dalla capacità di riconoscimento individuale alle paure, dai giochi all’alleanza con predatori intelligenti e pericolosi come i lupi. Unendo rigore scientifico e senso dell’umorismo e soprattutto la brillantezza dello stile, Heinrich ci racconta in pagine animate da un contagioso entusiasmo quelli che, alla fine di questo libro, non vedremo più come semplici uccelli, bensì come esseri viventi sommamente espressivi, in grado di comunicare emozioni, intenzioni e aspettative – e che si comportano come se ci capissero.
