Gli animali pensano mai alla morte? In che modo lo fanno? Nonostante non sia facile accostarsi a questo tema, è solo rivolgendoci al suo aspetto più ‘naturale’ che possiamo trovare una via d’ingresso alla sua comprensione: la morte, sebbene dolorosa, è parte integrante della vita. Scrive l’autrice Susana Monsó: «Noi umani facciamo fatica ad accettare quanto sia comune e insignificante la morte nel mondo naturale. Sappiamo che la morte avviene, ma di solito non la vediamo». Questo nostro essere al di qua rispetto alla morte ha fatto sorgere un ostacolo non indifferente alla comprensione della cognizione animale: diversi tanatologie filosofi ritengono, infatti, che la morte sia un «concetto astratto». Ma per gli animali in natura la morte non è astratta. È, al contrario, «molto concreta e tangibile» ci avverte l’autrice che, con delicatezza e rispetto delle discipline scientifiche con cui si confronta, cerca di isolare quelle sacche di antropocentrismo che impediscono una più profonda conoscenza della mente animale. Questo libro è un valido e interessante antidoto contro le eccessive riserve di chi ritiene che l’essere umano sia l’unico animale dotato di una vita mentale ed emotiva. Parallelamente, ci mette in guardia sulle precipitose attribuzioni di sentimenti agli animali, le cui esperienze sono costitutivamente diverse dalle nostre. La pluralità di modi in cui la morte viene vissuta in natura ci precipita direttamente nel cuore della materia più misteriosa di tutte: là dove sembra essersi creato uno squarcio, un vuoto irreparabile, ecco che si palesa, palpitante, la vita.
