Da millenni i rapaci notturni, gufi e civette in modo particolare, ci affascinano e incuriosiscono. Gli umani, per il loro sguardo enigmatico e il volo silenzioso, li hanno spesso considerati un simbolo di saggezza, conoscenza e lungimiranza oppure, al contrario, portatori di sventura, spiriti maligni o simboli di morte. La nostra attrazione per questi uccelli misteriosi è antichissima tanto che li possiamo trovare raffigurati già nelle antichissime pitture rupestri di Chauvet, nel sud della Francia, ma gufi e civette compaiono anche nei geroglifici egizi, nella mitologia, nelle favole, in Shakespeare e nei romanzi di Harry Potter. Ma cosa sa veramente un gufo? E cosa sappiamo noi, davvero, dei gufi e degli altri rapaci notturni? Anche se il nostro interesse risale a tempi immemori, gli scienziati hanno iniziato solo di recente a comprendere in modo più chiaro la natura complessa di questi straordinari uccelli. Oggi conosciamo circa duecentosessanta specie di strigidi (la famiglia a cui appartengono gufi e civette) che risiedono in tutti i continenti, tranne l’Antartide, ma sono molto più difficili da trovare e studiare rispetto ad altri uccelli perché sono criptici, si mimetizzano e, soprattutto, vivono nel buio della notte. In questo saggio Jennifer Ackerman racconta – con il suo stile preciso e coinvolgente che l’ha fatta diventare una delle divulgatrici scientifiche più amate – non solo la storia e le caratteristiche tipiche di questi uccelli, ma anche le straordinarie scoperte scientifiche che sono state fatte negli ultimi anni. Ackerman ha passato molto tempo sul campo insieme agli scienziati per capire e raccontarci come, grazie alle nuove tecnologie, siano riusciti a scoprire moltissimo sul modo in cui questi affascinanti volatili cacciano, comunicano, corteggiano, si accoppiano e allevano i loro piccoli.
