A metà del diciottesimo secolo, lo scrittore italiano Domenico Balestrieri, addolorato per la morte del suo gatto, chiese gli scrittori suoi amici di comporre una poesia in suo onore. Il desiderio fu esaudito da ben ottanta artisti e nel 1741 venne pubblicato Lagrime in morte di un gatto, il primo libro nella storia della letteratura dedicato esclusivamente a un felino.
